Researchers* based at the University of Pennsylvania found that the main compound in olive oil, oleocanthal, contains the same properties as the pain killer ibuprofen. Ibuprofen has been linked to a lower risk of cancer and heart problems, as has aspirin, which belongs to the same class of anti-inflammatory drugs called COX (cyclooxgenase) inhibitors.

The study concluded that extra virgin olive oil — made from the first pressing of the olive — may offer similar long term advantages.
